Analysis of UP 2017 Legislative Assembly Election

The election to the 17th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was held from 11 February 2017 to 8 March 2017. The voting took place in 7 phases. Counting took place on 11 March 2017. This election saw voter turnout of 61.04% compared to 59.40% in the previous election. BJP won this election by an overwhelming three quarter majority of 312 seats, despite the party not projecting a chief ministerial candidate before the election. The strategy of Bharatiya Janata Party was well thought out by the party president Amit Shah. As part of its strategy BJP contested the election under a collective leadership and capitalized mostly on the brand image of PM Narendra Modi.
